ORGANIZATION: Structure & Funding of CCLS

Structure. Although CCLS is a part of Columbia University’s Fu Foundation School of Engineering and Applied Science, the Center is a self-financing organization – in business world terminology, more like a subsidiary. As a result, CCLS research scientists can commit 100% of their time to client projects rather than splitting their time between research and teaching.

Unlike a corporate research lab or private “think tank” with a limited number of interns sometimes only during the summer, CCLS has access to a continuous supply of highly skilled graduate school students who look for big projects and “meaty” problems as they build their careers. Even with their tuition and a stipend, they add much less to a budget than the salary and benefits of a professional researcher. And they bring to their work fresh ideas about the latest developments in their fields as well as an intense commitment and enthusiasm for turning today’s impossible challenges into future breakthroughs.

Funding.CCLS projects are funded through corporate contracts and grants, and grants from government agencies, including the National Science Foundation (NSF), DARPA, National Institutes of Health (NIH), and other agencies.
