In April 2003 Columbia University created the Center for Computational Learning Systems (CCLS) within the Fu Foundation School of Engineering and Applied Sciences (SEAS) with Dr. David Waltz as its founding director. Today more than 30 CCLS research scientists, grad students, professional staff members, and industry specialists work in collaboration with Computer Science and other Columbia University departments. CCLS has become a hub for basic machine learning research and especially the application of machine learning to large scale business and government systems, systems reliability and security, natural language translation and understanding, computational biology and bioinformatics, and computer vision.
Unlike faculty in a university teaching department, CCLS scientists and staff can commit 100% of their time to research projects. Most of our researchers supervise graduate students working at CCLS for course credit or on dissertations. CCLS researchers occasionally offer courses as adjunct faculty. Depending on the requirements of each project, a CCLS team can draw on the knowledge and skills of faculty, students and researchers from Columbia University as well as from other universities, companies, and government.
